How many Mayors are there for Wigan and how much does it cost - or do we just have the Greater Manchester Mayor

I -spy Wigan has its own Mayor. Why we need one in this day and age is any ones guess I don't know if it an honorary title but most functions there is a car and chauffer which has to be paid for by us laid on to get to these functions

Local Council Mayor's are a Councillor and each year one is selected by fellow Councillors to attend events in a Borough and also act as Chairman at full meetings of the Council.

As for the car and chuffer, surely nobody wants the Boroughs leading citizen in his full regalia to be going around ?in his own car or a taxi?

The Mayor's of Meropolitan Counties like Greater Manchester are chosan by the electorate and received a salary to run services in the County like puiblic transport etc.

The information provided by the Council has regards the cost of having a Mayor, is the cost of transporting the Mayor to functions, and that is around the £20,000 a year mark, and most of that money is paid to a company who provide 'Chauffeur Drivers' as regards what the allowance the Mayor receives over and above his or her Councillor Allowances, Wigan Council will not say what that figure is.

OC if we did away with the position of Mayor look at the money that could be used to fill potholes which is more important being a road user

The role of the Mayor's Chauffeur is usally carried out by one of the employed Town Hall Keepers like for example, it is in Chorley. If the Labour controlled Wigan Council are spending most of £20.000 on a chauffeur driven car provided by a private company for its Mayor to carry out civic duties, some questions need to be asked!

I do remember Thomas the Tank Engine taking the Mayor of Sodor for a ride, along with the Fat Controller, Sir Topham Hatt.

What exactly does a Mayor do? All I've been able to find out is that they attend civic and ceremonial functions and local community activities.

I just looked up what they get paid and Greater Manchester's Mayor gets £110,00 per annum and their chauffeurs get £20,000. Summat not right there.

I'd go to functions and din-dins for a lot less than that!

I once was invited to the mayors ball at haigh hall.My wife was the mayors cousin.I would be in the seventies if i remember and the mayors surname was Sumner.We had a nice meal and a free bar.

Councillors on local Councils only receive an allowance and the position of Mayor is only a honary postion each year.

It is only the elected Mayors of Metropolitan Counties like Greater Manchester who are paid a salary which comes out of the precept on the Council Tax bill.

With so much confusion about the two different type of Mayor, perhaps the County one's should have a different title!

I think the Mayor does get some sort of allowance, and last year the Mayor of Wigan attended 422 functions

Maybe he does now on top of his normal allowance, but the fact remains that the ceremonial postion on a local council is different to that of the elected and salary paid Mayor's like Andy Burnham and Citizan Khan etc which some on Wigan World do not seemed to understand.
